Australian Deck Watchkeepers (DWK) Leading to Bachelors in Applied Science

The programme is conducted in collaboration with Australian Maritime College (AMC), University of Tasmania, Australia. On successful completion of all three phases, Certificate of Competency as a Deck Watch-keeper (Second Mate FG) will be issued by Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA).

Eligibility

The minimum educational qualification is “A” level and its equivalent (10+2 years of formal study), within the following streams:

  • Science (Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics) – 50% aggregate
  • Age limit 17.5 to 25 yrs
  • Medical fitness: Medical and Eye-sight requirements shall be as per the existing standards of AMSA.

This will comprise 3 months training provided by various MTIs located in India.

The training during this time will cover the following subjects:

  1. English Language & Standard Marine Communication Phrases;
  2. General Ship Knowledge and Safety;
  3. Monitor Compliance with Legislative Requirements;
  4. Plan and Conduct a Passage and Determine Position;
  5. Electronic Aids to Navigation;
  6. Safe Working Practices aboard merchant ships;
  7. Seamanship; and
  8. Watch-keeping and Collision Regulations

Besides the Phase I, this course will also include the Five modular courses as required by STCW ’78 as amended namely:

  1. Personal Survival Techniques
  2. Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting
  3. Elementary First Aid
  4. Personal Safety and Social Responsibility
  5. Security Training for Seafarers in Designated Security Duties

Students will complete 18 months of shipboard training, which will include at least 6 months of bridge duties in a capacity that fully understudies the officer of the watch.

During this period, the students will complete:

A Task & Guided Study Program (TAGS), covering two booklets of assignments, namely:

TAGS-A & TAGS-B

(The trainees will be registered to the TAGS Program provided by Australian Maritime College. On completion of TAGS Booklets, the trainee will submit the same to MTIs who will then evaluate the TAGS. The Final Review and Assessment will be done by AMC).

Students will attend college in Australia for 8 months at Australian Maritime College, Tasmania, Australia. During this time, they will continue their studies in the required subjects and will complete all of the assessments required for the issuance of a Certificate of Competency.

Students would also complete the training necessary for the following STCW/other courses:

  • Oil Tanker Familiarisation Course
  • Advanced Fire Fighting
  • Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boat
  • Global Maritime Distress and Safety System
  • Medical First Aid

Certifications

  • After Phase 1, MTI will issue a Certificate of completion to students having successfully completed PRE-SEA TRAINING.
  • After Phase II, AMC shall issue a Certificate of completion of TAGS to all students who have successfully completed the TAGS Assignments.
  • After Phase 3 of this programme, including all assessments and mandatory/other courses, the student shall be issued with a Deck Watch Keepers(DWK) Certificate of Competency, by AMSA.
  • After Phase 3 of this programme, the students will also be awarded a Diploma in Applied Science, provided he can satisfy all criteria for this Diploma.

Third Navigating Officer (Officer of the Watch - OOW)

With sufficient sea service and completion of required training, individuals can advance to the position of a 3rd navigating officer. This role involves more responsibilities in ship navigation, safety procedures, and watchkeeping.

Second Navigating Officer (Officer of the Watch - OOW)

As individuals gain experience and accumulate sea service, they may progress to the position of a navigating officer (OOW). This role involves being in charge of a watch on the ship's bridge and overseeing navigation and safety procedures.

Chief Officer

Further progression in the career can lead to the role of Chief Officer. Chief Officers have significant responsibilities in managing the deck department, cargo operations, and overall ship operations.

Captain (Master Mariner)

The highest rank for a navigating officer is Captain or Master Mariner. Captains are responsible for the overall command and navigation of the ship. This position requires extensive experience, additional certifications, and a proven track record.

Salary Progression

The salary progression in the merchant navy is influenced by factors such as rank, experience, type of vessel, and employer. Here is a general idea of salary ranges at different career stages:

  • Deck Cadet: Entry-level stipend or salary Approx USD 500 per month
  • Third Navigating Officer: Moderate salary increase, Approx USD 2400-3000 per month
  • Second Navigating Officer (OOW): Further salary increase Approx USD 3500-5500 per month
  • Chief Officer: Substantial salary increase, Approx USD 8000-12000 per month
  • Captain (Master Mariner): Highest salary level, Approx USD 11000 -15000 per month
